The AMPERE Newsletter appears quarterly and covers short topical articles written by experts in the field. Typically it also includes a profile, conference reports, advertisements, a calendar of events and news items on various aspects of radio frequency and microwave energy usage in the ISM frequency band, covering topics broadly from 1 MHz to 30 GHz, although higher frequencies have also been covered. It also highlights on promising new research developments to emanate from academe and industry.

BAYREUTH CONFERENCE COMING ON STREAM.

The eighth international conference on Microwave and High Frequency Heating is less than eight months away (3-7th September 2001) and the organising comittee lead by Professor Monika Willert-Porada are working hard to ensure that the quality and participation of this important event meet the high standard set by the previous venues. An excellent programme of industry, commerce and academe is being put together so I hope you will attend and present oral or poster papers.

Abstracts and Papers.

Two page summaries of papers are invited for consideration by the Technical Programmes Commitee and should be received by 1 March 2001. The summaries must be written in English. Authors are kindly requested to submit their papers via registration at the internet address http://www.uni-bayreuth.de/ampere8th/ (click registration). The menu for abstracts will then open. The author will be given a code number and a password, which will also be sent to him/her via E-mail.

An abstract submission is also possible by E-mail or fax to:
E-mail: b.kuppinger@uni-bayreuth.de
or monika.willert-porada@uni-bayreuth.de
or fax: ++49 921-55 7205

A fax or printed submission should be followed by a 3.5'' disc-file of the abstract, for inclusion in the abstract book.

For more information on the abstracts and full papers visit the AMPERE BAYREUTH website at http://www.uni-bayreuth.de/ampere8th/. You will find this address at the AMPERE website on http://www.ampereeurope.org where more information about AMPERE in general can be found. The Bayreuth website also gives some information of the short course to be held on the first day, Monday 3rd September.

The full schedule is a s follows:

Abstract (2 pages), deadline February 28th 2001
Notification of Acceptance March 31st 2001
Registration of Authors, deadline April 30th 2001
Full Paper manuscript May 31st 2001 (only for selected papers)

The conference will stage an exhibition and there will also be the opportunity for the delegates and their partners to visit sites of interest in the area.

In this issue we also highlight the activities of the Microwave Applications Group at Modena in Italy. Cristina Leonelli describes the early stages of the development of the laboratory which led to some important applications of microwave energy. Albert Gourdenne reflects on the 2nd Microwave Chemistry conference held at Juan le Pins in September 2000 and Jon Binner gives a brief resume of its associated round table. Finally, Andre-Jean Berteau announces the events that lead to MES becoming a subsidiary of SIDEL while Walter van Loock summarises the OPTIM2 conference which was held in Romania in May 2000
