The AMPERE Newsletter appears quarterly and covers short topical articles written
by experts in the field. Typically it also includes a profile, conference reports,
advertisements, a calendar of events and news items on various aspects of radio
frequency and microwave energy usage in the ISM frequency band, covering topics
broadly from 1 MHz to 30 GHz, although higher frequencies have also been covered.
It also highlights on promising new research developments to emanate from academe
and industry.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Harry Rubbright on Sunday 18th February at this home in Minnesota. Harry was one of the stalwarts within the microwave community who combined a flair for recognising the close relationship of material processing with the newer techniques such as radio frequency and microwave heating. His obituary appears on page 5.
Following a Commitee meeting in Pares in early January it was decided to introduce "newsy" type articles to the AMPERE web site. More developments are planned so keep on surfing.
In this issue Gavin Whittaker of the University of Edinburgh describes the origins of the group after completing his PhD under Professor Mike Mingos at Oxford and moving to Scotland to work with Andrew Harrison.
Also in this issue, Milan Hajek presents his recent involvement in a project which entails the use of microwaves in glass making.
The next biennial AMPERE conference will be staged at the University of Bayreuth in Germany under the chair of Professor M. Willert-Porada. This is the 8th in the series of AMPERE conferences on high frequency and microwave processing. Well over one hundred papers are anticipated at the conference signalling an exciting mix of theoretical as well as practical aspects being discussed at the conference.
By now most of you should have registered or you are about to do so. Therefore do browse through the AMPERE web site which has a link direct to the conference web site to find out more about the details including on-line registration facilities.
