The AMPERE Newsletter appears quarterly and covers short topical articles written
by experts in the field. Typically it also includes a profile, conference reports,
advertisements, a calendar of events and news items on various aspects of radio
frequency and microwave energy usage in the ISM frequency band, covering topics
broadly from 1 MHz to 30 GHz, although higher frequencies have also been covered.
It also highlights on promising new research developments to emanate from academe
and industry.

Editor's Comments
It is once again with a great sadness that I have to announce the death of another colleague from the USA. Dr Charles Buffler, President of IMPI, died in February and his obituary appears on page 5 of this issue.
The main article is written by Professor José Senise who briefly describes the current scene in Brazil regarding rf and microwave heating. Brazil has a long tradition in this area and although it has currently subjected to its usual cyclical nature, I am glad to see that many centres are stil active in this area.
Following the AMPERE meeting in Antibes, Professor Raj Varma, from the National Risk Management Research Laboratory at Cincinnati, writes a short article in this issue regarding microwave accelerated solvent-free chemical reactions. I do sincerely hope that these laboratory scale experiments lead to industrial scale plants as I believe that the credibility of microwave-chemistry related work is at stake if these ideas remain embedded in the laboratory.
The arrangements for next September's AMPERE conference at Bayreuth, Germany are progressing at a pace under the stewardship of Professor Willert-Porada and her team. This is the eighth biennial conference and the programme envisages three parallel sessions, numerous Poster sessions and a number of invited and plenary lectures. Visit the AMPERE web site www.ampereeurope.org which has a direct link to the web site at Bayreuth for the latest information.
Regarding the AMPERE web site I still urge members to communicate via the FORUM section to exchange views on many aspects of rf and microwave heating. Professor Binner's 'newsy' items are well worth reading and commenting upon.
